THE SCENE: More than 1,000 University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) supporters recently gathered at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio to celebrate the 2015 President’s Gala honoring Bartell and Mollie Zachry. The theme for the event was “An Evening of Service”, a fitting tribute to the couple and to the mission of the UTHSC, as well. In accepting the role as gala honorees, the Zacharys expressed their desire for the event to benefit a cause that reflected their commitment to serving the community. In keeping with this wish, UTHSC President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP announced at the gala the establishment of South Texas’ first Institute for Alzheimer and Neurodegenerative Disease supported by $35 million in funds raised primarily from the community.
THE VIBE: The Institute, set to open in 2016, will be located at the Medical Arts and Research Center of UT Medicine San Antonio. It will offer hope to patients and families by providing comprehensive clinical care and leading medical research to advance new therapies in the war against Alzheimer’s. Proceeds of the gala totaling $600,000 will establish the Zachry endowment.
THE CAUSE: Honorary chairs of the gala, were Ann Biggs and, in memoriam, her late husband, Glenn. Hope for patients like Glenn Biggs and for families traveling the same road as his is on the horizon, as Dr. Henrich also announced the establishment of the Bartell and Mollie Zachry Endowment for Alzheimer Research and Patient Care. This endowment will benefit the Institute for Alzheimer and Neurodegenerative Disease in perpetuity.
