What happens when you combine a Masters Champion with Grammy Award-winning songwriters? The answer is one of the most fun and unique events in Austin’s annual social scene, the Links & Lyrics gala, held at Barton Creek Country Club. Through the gallant efforts of Alzheimer’s fund raising non profit AWARE Texas and its members, over $14.5 million in research dollars has been granted to Baylor College of Medicine, UT Southwestern-Dallas, UT Health Science Center San Antonio, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center and North Texas State University Health Sciences Center Ft. Worth.
The all-day affair, led by event co-chairs Ava Late and Senator Buster Brown, gathered a prestigious guest list of philanthropic Texans from across the state to help raise funds for AWARE Texas, to find a cure and offer preventive care for Alzheimer’s Disease. The began promptly at 11:30 with a buffet lunch that was served al fresco at the club’s Patio Grill and was promptly followed by a putting clinic instructed by Master’s winner Ben Crenshaw. Upon completion of the clinic, the real fun began as foursomes made their way to the links for a round of golf.
After the groups played 18 holes, the several hundred guests donned their Nashville Grammy casual duds for a great night of musical entertainment in the Darryl Royal Ballroom. Grammy Award-winning songwriters Paul Overstreet, Mike Reid and Jeffrey Steele, who have written songs for such country legends as Kenny Chesney, The Judds, Allison Kraus, Randy Travis and Tanya Tucker, lit up the stage and sang the night away performing their legendary country tunes – the perfect and relaxing end to a fun day that combined the best of everything Austin has to offer.
