THE SCENE: The new and highly anticipated Tobin Center for the Performing Arts opened its doors recently, hosting the 2014 Opening Gala on the banks of the River Walk underneath a sparkling sky complemented by the venue’s shimmering LED illuminated AT&T Sky Wall. Tall topiary structures, blooming with the venue’s plum-colored logo, created a statuesque and elegant entrance into the spectacular Center that was presented to its supporters for the first time.
THE VIBE: Guests were passed fl utes of bubbly as they stepped into the newly renovated historic structure, and were lured into the lobby by the modern sounds of jazz harpist Rizpah. Over three hundred distinguished donors and supporters made their way through the Mays Family Foundation Historic Facade and Foyer, the Red and Charline McCombs Grand Lobby, and into the H-E-B Performance Hall for a seated dinner presented by Tobin Catering, and entertainment provided by sand artist Joe Castillo and pianist Tony DeSare. The Tobin Center founders led guests in a toast with plum purple Waterford crystal champagne fl utes that were gifted to each guest.
Over a hundred Ghost Light Society members, the young professional supporters of The
Tobin Center, enjoyed cocktails and dinner upstairs in The Denman Founders Lounge, as DJ JJ Lopez spun beats that created a sophisticated, yet trendy ambiance. After dinner, they were guided backstage, preparing to energize the audience in welcoming the next phase of the evening: dancing on the H-E-B Performance Hall stage with the legendary Blues Brothers Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi, and the Blues Brothers Band. Guests flooded the stage with everyone singing, swinging and shimmying until the wee hours of the morning.
