THE SCENE: The newly opened JW Marriott hotel in downtown Austin was the setting for a night of fun for a worthy cause. The Wonders and Worries “Unmasked” gala attracted almost 500 of Austin’s Sociables to raise awareness for children whose families are affected by chronic illness.
THE VIBE: The masquerade-themed event, which featured black-tie-optional attire, began as guests entered the foyer of the venue’s ballroom where party-goers identified old friends underneath their masks and unmasked new friends while bidding on silent auction items. The attendees then entered the new hotel’s ballroom where they dined on delicious cuisine during the program. Afterward, the party went on well into the night as guests danced the night away to the tunes of DJ Gatsby.
THE CAUSE: The event, co-chaired by Rosemary Douglas and Melinda Garvey, while Lori and Bruce Cook served as decoration chairs, raised $253,000 for Wonders and Worries, which provides psychological support in both English and Spanish for children ages 2-18 who are coping with parents or caregivers facing a life-threatening illness.
