THE SCENE: The grounds of the San Antonio Zoo set the scene for a fun-filled flashback to the 80’s at the annual Zoobilation Ball, themed Back Zoo The Future. Guests this year were brought “Back to the Future” to homage to the 30 years of success seen by the San Antonio Zoo and its annual gala, an event that proves every year to be one of the hottest tickets in town.
THE VIBE: Absolute adventure underneath a retro-inspired tent awaited the patrons who found themselves in the company of a DeLorean time machine and décor that included neon cassette tapes and vinyl-record bedecked chandeliers. Dayglo linens draped each table topped with totally tubular cylindrical centerpieces in bright splashes of color set off by flamingos in a nod to a few of the Zoo’s resident favorites. Transported gala guests danced the night away on the fabulous black and white dance floor surrounded by a room electrified by ‘80s tunes and neon hues.
Rosemary’s Catering treated guests to the evening’s cuisine, starting with passed hors d’oeuvres including: mini Beef Wellingtons, mac n’ cheese croquettes, and an iced seafood display with poached shrimp cocktail and snow crab claws. The three-course meal that followed included a salad with Brie, macerated strawberries, poached pear, toasted almonds and poppy seed dressing, braised beef short ribs with smoky bacon demi glaze paired with creole blackened shrimp with a citrus butter, a creamy Yukon gold puree, and herb tossed baby vegetable mélange. For dessert guests enjoyed “Doc” brownies – cocoa crispy brownie tarts and a creamy brandy-spiked milkshake in a snifter.
Guests danced the night away to hit 80s tunes in rooms washed in neon by JSAV and a live auction brought the house down with spectacular prizes which set the bar high… for the future.
THE CAUSE: Event chairs Sheila and Marko Barrett, along with co-chairs Rosa and Roby Latimer, helmed the success of the evening. Through its passion and expertise in animal care, conservation and education, the San Antonio Zoo’s mission is to inspire its community to love, engage with, act for, and protect animals and the places they live. The Zoo welcomes more than one million visitors each year.
