THE SCENE: The grand foyer of the Wortham Theater was overflowing with pink roses and champagne as over 400 supporters of The Legacy Community Health Center attended the organization’s 14th annual Legacy Luncheon honoring Dr. Kelli Cohen Fein. The sold-out event, chaired by Mary Ann McKeithan, raised over $250,000 for The Legacy Community Health Center’s Little Readers program.
THE VIBE: The vibe was one of sentiment and beauty. After mingling the crowd was welcomed by Legacy CEO Katy Caldwell and Legacy Chief Development Cfficer Chree Boydtun, who spoke of the organization’s accomplishments of providing “health care in a judgement-free zone for over 125,000 patients.” Chair Mary Ann McKeithan introduced a video tribute to Dr. Kelli Cohen Fein with cameos by Shelby Hodge, Phoebe Tudor, and Martin Fein, Kelli’s husband, who spoke of her grace, service to the community, and professional accomplishments. To close, event emcee Dominique Sachse instructed a group of blazer-clad KIPP youngsters to walk around and collect donation cards.
THE CAUSE: Since 2015, over 26,000 books have been given to Legacy youngest patients with the inception the Little Readers program. HEB also announced its continuous support of the program through 2020. Legacy Health Center is a full-service, federally-qualified health center that has worked tirelessly for the past 35 years to make Houston healthier by serving disadvantaged populations. It was one of the earliest care centers with HIV/AIDS programming and more recently, preemptive messaging and preventative measures against the Zika virus within the region.
