This long, hot summer, take advantage of the Austin arts while everyone else is in Aspen or floating around the islands. Starting July 10th, ZACH Theater presents a must see play: One Night With Janis Joplin. In this production, viewers journey through Joplin’s quest to become the Queen of Rock and Roll, while enjoying Joplin’s greatest hits and the music of those who inspired her. Joplin, as we know, has deep roots to Austin and performing at Threadgill’s in the 1960s as she was ascending her career.
Paying tribute to the esteemed singer, ZACH Theatre partnered with Joplin’s estate, JAM, and One Night Production, as the playwright-director Randy Johnson received unprecedented access to the Joplin family archives to create the production. This enabled him to give audiences a profound immersion in this blues belting innovator’s musical business, making the authenticity of the play so exciting to see.
What’s a fantastic show without an extraordinary cast? In this production, Kacee Clanton stars as Janis. According to ZACH’s Producing Artist Director Dave Steakley, “Kacee Clanton is one of the foremost interpreters of Janis Joplin’s music in the world”. He goes on to say, “She has previously played the role of Janis Joplin in the play Love, Janis and is sure to steal the spotlight in this production. In addition, Tiffany Mann is going to keep audience members on the edge of their seats with her background in classical training in combination with her impassioned voice. She is perfect for a role that demands the vocalist take us from the opera house with Porgy & Bess, to the earthiness of Oddetta, to the blues shout of Etta James. One Night With Janis Joplin also stars Felicia Dinwiddle, Tricky Jones, and Cari Hutson as Joplinaires.” There is no doubt this cast will create a spotlight on the production.
ZACH’s new Topfer Theater for performances for this production will be July 10th – August 18th on Tuesday- Saturday at 8 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. For more information about One Night with Janis Joplin visit http://www.zachtheatre.org
