THE SCENE: Austin was recently the scene for two evenings devoted to celebrating the best of Texas film. The 15th Annual Texas Film Awards was extra special this year, honoring the cast and crew of recent as well as legendary Oscar®-winning actor and native Texan Tommy Lee Jones.
THE VIBE: The two evenings of Texas-sized celebrations began at a “penthouse in the sky” for the opening VIP party where Austin’s artistic elite socialized and sipped cocktails with the evening’s many honorees. On the second night, the fun moved to Austin Studios, where celebrities and localebrities dazzled on the red-carpet arrival, which spilled into a fun cocktail hour which had attendees bidding on silent auction items in the event area, as well as mingling in the VIP green room.
Guests then entered the cavernous studio for the program that honored Texas’ impact on the film industry, as big as Texas itself. Producer Mike Judge effortlessly emceed the evening as the honorees were celebrated. This year’s honorees included: Bonnie Curtis, Guillermo del Toro, Tommy Lee Jones, and Luke Wilson (who couldn’t get away from filming his new project), while posthumous awards were given to Kit Carson and Christopher Evan Walsh. The program culminated in honoring Boyhood for its indelible mark on Texas, Austin and the film industry as a whole.
THE CAUSE: The evenings celebrating the best of Texas Film were co-chaired by Bobbi Topfer and Armando Zambrano. The ceremonies raised a record $830,000 for the Austin Film Society, which empowers the Austin community to make, watch and love film and creative media.
