An American Hero Discusses Life, Liberty And Status As Living Legend

THE SCENE: More than 500 guests gathered in the heart of downtown Military City, USA gathered recently to take part in the 8th annual A Conversation With a Living Legend® San Antonio. News personality Chris Wallace interviewed the honoree University of Texas System Chancellor and U.S. Navy four-star Admiral William H. McRaven. The hour-long conversation kept the audience at rapt attention with his stories that spanned military culture, politics, and even University of Texas football.
THE VIBE: The patriotism that filled the Marriott Rivercenter ballroom was undeniable as the UTSA Choir opened the event with a rendition of the national anthem. Officers from UT Health San Antonio and UTSA were recognized for their courageous efforts to help colleagues in Houston during Hurricane Harvey. The program also included remarks from Marshall Hicks, M.D., president ad interim of MD Anderson; Peter Pisters, M.D. MHCM current president of MD Anderson and William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president of UT Health San Antonio.
THE CAUSE: Co-chairs Kathryn Mays Johnson and Bill Johnson and Marsha McCombs Shields and John created an event truly marked by honor and love of country. Honorary chairs included Peggy and Lowry Mays and Red and Charline McCombs. Founding Chairs of this event were Kim and Clyde Johnson IV and Paula and Clyde Johnson III. This year’s event broke fundraising records, raising more than half a million dollars. In the eight years since its inception, A Conversation With a Living Legend® San Antonio has raised over $2.5 million for lifesaving programs, innovative cancer treatment and novel cancer research. These efforts touch the lives of cancer patients worldwide. MD Anderson ranks as one of the world’s most respected centers focused on cancer patient care, research, education and prevention.
