THE SCENE: The McNay Art Museum in San Antonio is turning 60 this year and it hosted a whimsical winter soiree to celebrate the landmark. The museum came alive, opening its gallery spaces to generous donors of the special anniversary fund, and welcomed the next generation of young supporters to its first ever After Dark late-night event.
THE VIBE: Guests of the celebration arrived at the original McNay residence, a Spanish colonial-revival mansion built in the 1920’s, and sipped champagne as they wandered through the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. Following the welcome reception, donors were led to the new Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions lobby to enjoy a pre-dinner toast. Guests were then invited to enjoy contemporary cuisine prepared by the RK Group in The Tobin Exhibition galleries, dining amongst a colorful contemporary pop-up exhibition featuring six Texas-based artists: Sylvia Benitez, Elizabeth Carrington, David Anthony Garcia, Allison Gregory, Rex Hausmann, and Leigh Anne Lester.
Following dinner, the event welcomed young supporters of the museum with initial After Dark party, a late-night luxury dance lounge scene flowing with libations and grooving with good vibrations from the wildly entertaining Dallas-based band, Professor D. Donors. Young patrons mingled and danced the night away in the Leeper Auditorium under an amethyst and emerald Gobo light glow, leaving the party-goers longing for more.
THE CAUSE: The McNay Art Museum engages a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts. In honor of this important milestone and the McNay’s six decades as one of the region’s leading cultural institutions, the Board of Trustees established the 60th Anniversary Fund for Exhibitions and Education to ensure the continued growth of the McNay’s changing exhibitions and related educational programs for students, adults, and art enthusiasts in the San Antonio community.
