THE SCENE: Blue Star Contemporary in Southtown San Antonio hosted its annual bingo night fundraiser to support of the museum’s exhibitions, the MOSAIC Student Artists Program, and the Berlin Residency Program. This year’s fundraiser, themed Blue Star Disco Bingo, saw the galleries transformed into funkadelic festive rooms filled with 70s-inspired elements such as vinyl record walls, tinseled tapestries, and sultry lounges. Guests donned their most daring disco attire, and arrived ready to have an out-of-sight night.
THE VIBE: In true Studio 54 style, local San Antonio artist luminaries called the bingo rounds, and the prize winners went home with original works of art by the callers. Supporters of the museum loved the entertainment provided by the fabulous Autumn Summer and her troupe of disco drag queens that lip-synched superfly hits between bingo rounds, and the party stayed alive well into the wee hours in the late night lounge.
Patrons boogied the night away to the sounds of DJ NETO in a special disco room with an LED-lit dance floor. Guests took fab photos in the Flipbook photo booth, and ladies enjoyed a lip-makeover bar by Neiman Marcus The attendees bid on amazing and adventurous silent auction packages, enjoyed themed cocktails provided by The Last Word, and devoured beefy bites by the museum’s newest savory Southtown neighbor, Frank.
THE CAUSE: Co-Chaired by Ellie Leeper and Mike Casey, the bingo event is part of Blue Star Contemporary, San Antonio’s first and longest-running venue for contemporary art. The organization’s robust calendar includes nearly 20 onsite and satellite exhibitions each year, with complementary public programs extending the creative dialogue. The MOSAIC Student Artists Program actively engages area youth in the creation and business of art—from art-making techniques to networking with patrons and accepting commissions. Blue Star annually awards four San Antonio artists three-month residencies at the renowned Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. The impact of their experiences is shared through Blue Star exhibitions and the artists’ contributions as creative leaders in our community. The proceeds from this event support these programs, ensuring Blue Star fulfills its mission of inspiring, nurturing, and innovating through contemporary art.
