THE SCENE: The goals of raising awareness for a cause that touches so many and honoring the 90th birthday to one of Texas most beloved residents, a touchdown was scored with the Darrell K. Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease’ Links and Lyrics/Ben Crenshaw – Willie Nelson – Darrell Royal – inspired gala, held at the newly-opened Hotel Granduca. As guests mingled in the Granduca Ballroom Foyer, they were able to wish a happy 90th birthday to Edith Royal, where a birthday cake for her was prominently on display along with an opportunity to add to a hand-written note of birthday wishes.
The action then turned to the venue’s ballroom, where guests dined during a program that read as a Who’s Who of those providing various tributes to Mrs. Royal. From declaring an official Edith Royal Day, to tributes from Willie and Amy Nelson and the Gatlin Brothers, to a musical performance by Con Huntley. What brought down the house was actor Matthew McConaughey, who led a birthday chorus for the guests who were treated to an evening honoring the legacy of the legendary Coach Royal.
THE VIBE: Polo shirts by day at the Barton Creek golf tournament, Prada by night for the gala meant there was style for everyone, creating a warm and welcoming environment for which Texans are world-renowned. The gala featured a mix of chic cocktail dresses for the ladies, while many of the men got into the country music spirit – boots, hats, and all.
THE CAUSE: The event, co-chaired by Late European’s Ava Late and Debbie Hanna, raised over $750,000 for the Darrel K. Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s disease, which enables preventive care and treatment strategies in fighting Alzheimer’s disease in Texas, the nation and the world.
